Mirrors

What is the best way to hang a mirror?
The first rule, never trust the original hanging mechanism unless you have checked it for integrity. Examine it, pull on it to ensure that the hanger is not loose and that it is embedded in viable wood. Ensure that the wire (cable, chain or rope) is intact and strong enough for the weight of the piece.
If you need to replace the hangers, we recommend D-shaped hooks mounted in pre-drilled metal straps that have one to four holes (these can be found in any hardware store and are often called “mirror mounts”). Choose the size according to the weight (use the four- hole straps for the heaviest pieces). Mount the hooks on a 15-20 degree angle on each side of the back and choose screws that are not any deeper than the thinnest part of the frame. Use appropriately gauged twisted metal wire. Run the wire through the D hook twice and allow at least 8 inches on each side to tightly twist around the part that will hang. On the wall, if the piece is not too heavy, standard picture hangers are adequate. For larger and heavier pieces, toggle bolts or studs come into play.
If you are unsure, we will be happy to assist you with a professional installation.
Should a mirror be re-silvered?
Technically, resilvering does not devalue your mirror as long as the glass is original. Aesthetically, resilvering often does not solve your problem. Glass becomes pitted over time and the caustic used to strip the old silvering is abrasive. When new silvering is applied, irregularities show up and the reflective clarity can be as imperfect as the original mirror. Consult with a local glass shop that does hand silvering for an opinion. Emotionally, we think of old mirror plates as records of times and lives gone by. “Blemishes” are in fact testimonies of age. The reflection is softer and there is undeniable charm in its faded glory!
